Parabens - The Unknown Quantity

It’s so important to be aware of what you’re eating, drinking, breathing and washing your clothes in these days. All the allergies, cancers and other terrible things reported in the media; the fear is endless.

But many of us never consider what we’re putting ON our bodies. You use so many personal care products every single day, and every time that you do, chemicals within them will enter your bloodstream.

When you look at the ingredients list on a popular brand of shampoo, toothpaste, shower gel and so on, you may feel like you’re back in GCSE chemistry. So many strange words and numbers, what on earth do they mean?

We’ve looked at SLS and what that is – but what about parabens?

Parabens are used as a preservative in personal care products, to extend their shelf life and make them “safe to use”. But some research suggests a correlation between paraben use and cancer.

Whilst no research has proven that parabens directly cause cancer, there is plenty to show that parabens have been found in cancerous tissue. And that is enough reason for me to avoid it all together.

Instead – opt for natural alternatives. These products, such as the range from Fresh Naturals use ingredients such as natural acids to ensure that your products don’t start growing nasties. Look for ingredients such as diazolidinyl urea, sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate. They still sound a bit chemistry-y, but they’re actually very friendly!

Ultimately it’s up to you to decide what you’re happy to be rubbing all over your body, but it’s safe to say that I’m following the natural path all the way.
